E. & H.T. Anthony Champion Camera

Variation 1C
New York, NY
ca. 1890

Ex-collection Michael Kramer

E. & H.T. Anthony manufactured their popular line of Champion cameras from around 1890 to 1895. They were made of mahogany with a fine varnish finish. Additional features included a rising front and ability to adapt for vertical or horizontal pictures. A distinctive Anthony cone shaped, single achromatic brass lens suitable for landscape photos came with the outfit. This camera is Variation 1C with the brass plate to make the bed rigid.

To my sensibilities this 4” x 5” Anthony Champion is a quintessential American view camera. Its leather bellows are in excellent condition, and the patina of the wood, and the evenness of tarnish on the brass lens and fittings are perfect for its age.
